Ear Coning
Printer Friendly
Always have two or more adults present.
The person to be coned should make themselves comfortable. They should lay on their side with their head on a pillow.
Leaving the ear to be coned exposed, completely cover the hair or any exposed skin with a towel. Cut a hole in the center of the paper plate and insert the cone through the hole.
Light the wide end of the cone and make sure the flame is burning steadily before placing the cone into the ear.
When smoke appears from the small end of the cone, have the person take a deep breath, then gently place the narrow end of the cone into the ear opening.
Carefully position the cone so that it is snug and in a vertical, or up and down, position. Now tilt the cone to a slight angle to allow the wax to deposit along the inside surface of the cone.
The flame propels the smoke down the cone and into the ear canal and should not be allowed to go out during the session. If smoke is escaping around the ear opening, gently adjust the cone for a better seal. The tighter the seal, the better the vacuum, and the more successful the treatment will be.
After a few minutes the flame will sputter and crackle and you will see white smoke curling from the wide end of the cone. This is the effect you desire. When 3 inches have burned, carefully cut the burned piece with the scissors and extinguish it in the glass of water.
Allow the cone to burn to no more than half of its original length, then gently and carefully remove the remainder of the cone and put the flame out in a glass of water.
Never snuff or blow out the cone while it is in the ear.
Using the peroxide clean the ear with a cotton swab.
Repeat the process again if you feel the ear is still blocked. In many cases, large accumulations of ear wax may require additional treatments.
